The 13 Curses by Michelle Harrison
In my opinion this was perhaps better than the first one merely because it seemed to go into more depth and detail in that the characters were given the chance to really come alive here with detail and a history. I loved the way that we were introduced to one of the characters from the first novel, but that we were also able to really dive into her life and gain a better understanding of who she is and what she is all about. I felt that the adventure she had to go meant that the reader became more understanding of the fairy world and what it occured of. It just seemed to hold much more adventure within it than that of the first book. However, there was still this essence of mystery in the background as well that was slightly annoying because it just made you wonder if the reader purposely leaves things undetailed so that you carry on with series.
I felt that the author really put a lot of care and attention into her main character here, and that the main characters of the first novel just became the background characters that were along for the ride. In this novel it was evident that she wanted the reader to understand the characters hard face nature, the reason for why she acted so tough and yet to show the reader that actually she is just as vulnerable and scared as any other person that is in her situation. For me the ending seemed a little cliche but at the same time it seemed to work because you were not expecting it. As far as you were concerned she had the second site like the other female characters. Yet what you did not expect was what her aunt told her. This in many ways added a whole new twist into the story.
The problem with this twist, was that I felt it was rushed through. It was captured within the last one hundred pages of the novel and it was not really focused on. I just felt that perhaps this could have been elaborated on more, to really give you the understanding of who she was. For example, perhaps the author could identify with the reader what sort of impact this will have on her life and her future. What does it now mean for her? does it change anything about her life and lifestyle. Perhaps it is just me being picky, but I do feel that this could have been elaborated on more and that it would have added even more to the novel, because a little more interest and power.
I would recommend this series of novels to anyone that likes to read books based on fairies, because it just holds and offers a whole new perspective that is different and unseen. Its engaging and yet racey at the same time and just pulls you in to this whole new world where not everything is as sweet as sugar.
